Terpen are hand-made hills which protected the Frisian people and their cattle against flooding caused by the high tides. The Hegebeintum terp is 9 metres high. When the Dutch started building sea defences, the mounds became less necessary as safe havens against flooding. In the 19th century much of the soil was removed and was used as fertiliser on agricultural land. A very steep slope is all that remains of the original, unique, Hegebeintum terp.
